The Trustees for the International Society for the History of the Map are pleased to announce the Best Paper Awards for papers delivered at the 2023 Symposium hosted in Berlin, Germany. The Prize Committee was chaired by Trustee André Reyes Novaes.

The Best Paper Award for a participant with a terminal degree is given to:

Sayantani Mukherjee (Ashoka University, Department of History and Ashoka Centre for China Studies, India) for the paper “The Constitution of ‘Colonial’ Cartography: Native Surveyors and the Building of a New Trans-Himalayan Episteme, 1860-1904”


The Best Paper Award for a participant without a terminal degree is given to:

Marissa Griffioen (PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam) for the paper “Early Modern Map Encounters: Representations of Map Circulation and Use in the Low Countries (1500-1800)”.
